Dr Fred Bryans Faculty Forum 2015 Highlighting Innovative Approaches to Research in Obstetrics and Gynaecology

The fifth annual Dr Fred Bryans Faculty Forum took place the afternoon of January 29, 2015 at the Granville Island Hotel. It attracted 59 participants (clinicians, researchers and trainees) from across our and affiliated departments.

We were very fortunate to have Dr Gavin Stuart, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and a member of our department, open the Forum. Dr Stuart, a very successful researcher in his own right, described the Gynecologic Cancer Intergroup, an international group that is enabling research on rare tumours through an international consortium of over a dozen countries.FBFF2015GStuart

Dr Bruce McManus, Director, Institute for Heart + Lung Health and CEO, Prevention of Organ Failure Centre of Excellence (PROOF Centre), presented the first keynote address – which was both funny and inspirational. He encouraged us to set lofty goals despite resource constraints and not shy away from risk. He also suggested venture philanthropy as another avenue to support your research program.FBFF2015BMcManus1

Dr Matthew Barber, Vice Chair for Research at the Cleveland Clinic, closed the day – by giving his insights on engaging clinicians in research and setting the foundation for a strong research program.FBFF2015MBarberweb
