Obstetrics and Gynecology is an essential component of the undergraduate medical curriculum and provides a unique blend of medicine and surgery. Whether you are interested in Obstetrics and Gynaecology as a career choice or just looking for information about the undergraduate medical education curriculum we hope you find answers here. Please feel free to contact us for any further information you require!

Formal exposure to the discipline of Obstetrics and Gynaecology begins in the pre-clerkship years through lectures, laboratory seminars and case-based learning tutorials.

In third year medical school, our department offers a six week core clinical rotation in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, where each student will participate in a variety of outpatient and inpatient health care activities at one of the UBC-affiliated teaching hospitals and ambulatory care centres. Formal teaching will be provided through a series of academic seminars and workshops.

In addition to covering areas of general Obstetrics and Gynaecology, some hospitals may provide learning opportunities in specialty areas such as high-risk pregnancy, infertility, urogynecology, endocrinology and gynecologic oncology. Students may also have some exposure to antenatal genetics, neonatal intensive care, ultrasound, colposcopy and paediatric gynaecology.

In the fourth year, students will have the opportunity to participate in many electives opportunities within Obstetrics and Gynecology.  The goal of the electives is to allow students to explore career possibilities, to gain experience in aspects of Obstetrics and Gynecology beyond the core curriculum, and to study subjects in greater depth. Knowledge, skills, and attitudes are further developed in a clinical context selected by students.
