Recently the UBC Centre for Pelvic Floor hosted a “Lunch and Learn” for patients.  At the lunch, the discussion centered around the breadth of the subspecialty and the need for more providers and research funds.  The lunch also helped to highlight that the Department is urgently seeking philanthropic support to advance research and training in pelvic floor disorders.

Also at the lunch two of the centre’s newest publications were discussed.  One of the newest publications entitled, “Mid-urethral slings on YouTube: quality information on the internet?” assessed the accuracy of information about mid-urethral sling surgery presented on YouTube.  The study team found that patient information on the subject is lacking and often biased, affecting both patient perceptions and the ability of trainees to supplement their education with social media.  The other publication “Teaching Vaginal Surgery to Junior Residents: Initial Validation of 3 Novel Procedure-Specific Low-Fidelity Models”, validated three new procedure-specific low-fidelity models to help teach junior OBGYN residents.

The Centre for Pelvic Floor is located at the Outpatient Clinic at St. Paul’s Hospital and is dedicated to diagnosing and treating disorders of the pelvic floor.
