New Division Head – Division of General Obstetrics and Gynaecology


Dr. Fariba Mohtashami is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. She completed medical school and Ob/Gyn residency in Tehran, Iran and practiced as a consultant for five years before moving to Canada in 2002. She completed her second residency at UBC in 2009 and followed her professional goal by a formal Fellowship in Minimally Invasive Gynaecologic Surgery, under Dr. J. Thiel.

Dr. Mohtashami has a strong interest in Gynaecologic surgery including pelvic floor reconstruction. She is passionate about surgical education with emphasis on fundamentals of surgery, efficiency and intraoperative decision making. She is a certified Fundamental of Laparoscopic Surgery (FLS) Proctor, Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES).

Dr. Mohtashami is regular chair, speaker and faculty at a variety of international and national conferences and post-graduate courses organized by the American Association of Laparoscopic Gynecologists (AAGL), in the European Union by the Dutch Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada (SOGC), and Association of Academic Professionals in Obstetrics and Gynaecology of Canada (APOG).

She is highly regarded for her teaching skills and contagious enthusiasm. This was recently recognized by being awarded a 2016 APOG Carl Nimrod Award for surgical mentorship.
